Where it all began.
In early 2022, Lauren and I were on our off-season from guiding horseback rides with Ranchlands in Colorado — Lauren in Uruguay leading rides on an idyllic estancia and me in Texas riding colts. In the midst of our winter dreaming, we decided to follow through on an idea we’d both had for a while. We wanted to do our own ride in Argentinian Patagonia the following winter — traveling on horseback, taking in the wilderness and culture, and meeting people along the way. So that’s what we did. We researched, fundraised, and arrived in Bariloche the first week of January 2023.
What ensued was three months (eight weeks with the horses) of an adventure more inspiring, challenging, and soul-opening than we could have imagined. From the lands we rode through to the horses that we knew we could rely on blind-folded and hands-tied (as long as we didn’t mind them stopping to snack on fresh grass), we felt ourselves deeply grounded in every moment. Strangers showered us with kindness and made a foreign place feel like home.
One moment stands out to me from early on in our trip. We crested a hill one afternoon, walking to stretch our legs and to give the horses a break during the slow and steady climb. Although we hadn’t talked for a while, the sound of our horses walking in step behind us, noticing little things like butterflies alighting along a trickle of water, and the funny way that time mixed with the sunlight and breeze made it not feel silent at all.
We paused at the top of the hill. Lauren turned to me and said, “this is amazing, I feel like the truest version of myself!” And that, in a nutshell, is what we are all about. Commitment to the journey. Connecting with horses, people, and the land. Finding community with others who want to sink their teeth into life and experience both the quiet and the deep thoughts that this sort of trek inspires. Embracing the truest version of yourself.
We can’t wait to ride with you!
